Our Approach

Working with Clients as Partners

SBA’s design philosophy involves partnering with our clients to produce spaces that inspire their occupants and their communities. Our approach focuses on converting each element of our clients’ vision into built reality—a process that requires careful listening, appreciation, and dedication. We bring a disciplined process and related graphic tools to enable each client to participate fully in the development of the design and realise the full physical potential of their vision.

SBA’s portfolio represents the integration of pragmatism with innovation, a combination that is essential to achieving this mission. We embrace solutions that lead to functional efficacy, high-efficiency performance, and cost and schedule maintenance, while balancing these practical considerations with unique, original, and forward-thinking solutions that generate architectural and aesthetic excellence.

Our innovative and conscientious design considerations often surpass an owner’s initial objectives. Not only do we generate facilities that support stimulating work and living environments, but we consider a range of additional elements that make for superb interior and exterior environments, such as ergonomics, daylight access, travel distances, thermal comfort, and activity adjacencies. Our planning and design strategies guide us toward solutions that are functional, flexible, and sensible.

Working as a Team

Internally at SBA, we promote a culture of learning and innovation. Our working process recognises the value of team collaborations on a daily basis, as well as the importance of information gathering and sharing across the firm.

Our objective is to work as partners, not just designers, and our firm culture represents this philosophy. We celebrate the fact that our diverse and talented staff is what forms the cornerstone of SBA as a design practice. We listen carefully to all voices and suggestions equally, and encourage our team members to think critically and to question preconceptions. The final product results in the most beautiful and efficient spaces possible.

Our project teams are organised into integrated design groups. This firm structure provides clients with the personal attention of a small boutique practice with the support, resources, and diversity of a larger, international corporation. Our cohesive teams are dedicated to a project from initial design conception through the details of construction documentation, which allows members to forge intimate relationships with clients.

As experts in our fields, we are published in professional journals, speak at national conferences, mentor our colleagues and students, and contribute to organisations advancing the future of our professions. Internally, we strive to inform and to innovate: with the assistance of practice advisory committees and firm-wide design reviews, we seek continual improvement, transformation, and development.  Capturing and disseminating the learning of all team members from one project to the next reinforces our aspiration to ensure that collaboration remains the key trademark of our philosophy and our practice.
