Cleveland Street Housing, London
London, United Kingdom
The Cleveland Street Housing Development consists of the whole of the site formerly occupied by the Middlesex Hospital Annex. Numerous options were developed in consultation with Camden Planners to develop a scheme which met both the aspirations of the Fiztrovia Area Action Plan and the provision of an appropriate combination of market rate and social housing. The resulting plan provides a total of 110 units. The scheme also includes refurbishment of the listed Stand Union Workhouse.
The design of the site took into consideration the broader neighbourhood redevelopment. This included connections to Tottenham Street and Charlotte Street providing pedestrian links through the larger urban block. The link between Cleveland Street and Charlotte Street re-establishes the historic ‘Bedford Passage’. The relationship to the new Sainsbury’s Wellcome Centre and Astor College was also a key consideration in the massing of the new housing blocks.
The proposed development is intended to provide a landscaped public realm with associated areas of public space for all users and residents to utilise. At the heart of the redeveloped site is a large courtyard.
